Opened Adhesive Containers: Record Dates Before Reissue
Track partially used adhesive containers with opening dates, supplier limits, storage exceptions and an issue-return worksheet. Avoid invented expiry extensions.
Keep an opened adhesive container identifiable after its first issue. Record the product, supplier lot, container ID, opening date, storage history and applicable use limits. Reissue it only when the responsible role can establish that the product-specific conditions are still met.
A bottle returns from production with half its contents left and a handwritten date on the cap. Stores cannot tell whether that date means receipt, opening or expiry. Putting it back beside unopened stock makes the next operator inherit the uncertainty.
Separate the supplier lot from the opened container
The stores lead manages container identity; the process or quality owner approves the applicable use rules. Start this record at first opening or when a partly used container returns. Bring the supplier label, current technical and safety information, the approved process instruction and the issue history.
Several bottles can share a supplier lot and have different opening histories. Give each opened container a separate identity while retaining the original lot. Do not replace the manufacturer's expiry with a new date simply because the bottle was opened later.

Use the instructions for the actual chemistry
Henkel's cyanoacrylate FAQ distinguishes storage before and after opening and says opened cyanoacrylates should not be refrigerated. That specific example shows why an unopened-storage rule cannot automatically be carried over to a used bottle. It is not a storage instruction for every adhesive.
Keep shelf life, an approved limit after opening, mixed-material working life and cure time as separate concepts. A two-part mixture's usable period does not reset because it is returned to stores. If the manufacturer provides no applicable open-use period, the process owner must resolve the use decision rather than inventing a standard number of days.
Work through a reissue decision
Illustrative date calculation only: a fictional product's approved instruction sets an opened-use limit of exactly 168 hours. Container AC-14 is opened at 10:00 on 30 September and has an original supplier expiry of 31 October. The opened-use limit is 10:00 on 7 October, provided every other required condition remains satisfied. This seven-day rule is invented for the example and must not be applied to a real adhesive.
If the container returns on 3 October with an unexplained storage interval, the calendar alone cannot release it. Put the reissue decision on hold for the authorised owner. If the opening timestamp is missing, do not use the return date as a substitute; preserve what is known and record the gap.
Quantity reconciliation helps avoid identity mistakes. If 500 grams were issued and 180 grams returned, the difference is 320 grams. Record it as an issue-return difference until actual consumption, waste and measurement uncertainty are reconciled. Do not automatically label all 320 grams as bonded product.
Keep holds visible at the point of issue
Separate containers pending review from released stock using the site's normal controls. Preserve the supplier label and any required hazard information. A damaged cap, unreadable identity or unknown decanting history needs an explicit decision. This worksheet supplies no disposal, mixing or handling procedure.
For a controlled rollout, inspect every open container in one selected area. Acceptance requires a legible identity, the original lot, a recoverable opening record, an applicable rule and an authorised current status. Record the unresolved containers and their owners before changing the issue sequence.

Can bottles from the same lot share one open date?
Only if each bottle's actual opening event supports it. Keep container-level records where dates or storage histories differ.
Does a normal appearance prove the adhesive is usable?
No. Apply the approved product and process criteria. Appearance cannot recover a missing history or extend a supplier limit.
